How the Sheep First Heard About It

The sheep first heard the phrase “Project 2026” the same way they hear most ominous human ideas: drifting over the fence on a confident tone, carried by the kind of certainty that suggests someone has already made decisions and would prefer not to answer follow-up questions.

At first, the sheep assumed it was just Project 2025 with a new label. Humans love sequels. They love adding a number and pretending that turns the same idea into a fresh one. The sheep have watched this happen with diets, exercise plans, and the annual vow to finally fix the barn roof. So they did what sheep usually do. They waited. They listened. They chewed.

One sheep, Marvin, who reads more than is healthy and has opinions about footnotes, stopped chewing.

“Project 2026 isn’t a plan,” Marvin said. “It’s what comes after the plan.”

That was when the pasture went quiet, because sheep understand what after means. After is when things stop being loud, the signs stop changing, and everyone is told this is simply how things work now.
